These Are the New Vehicles Left Under $30,000 in Canada
Small, affordable cars like the Nissan Versa and Kia Soul have recently vanished from their respective brands’ portfolios, following the trend of the last ten years. Automakers are increasing the number of SUVs and crossovers and raising their prices at the same time, eliminating more and more entry-level options in the process.
As a result, the psychological barrier of $20,000 has moved up to $25,000, then to $30,000. Want some examples? Well, here are all the new vehicles that currently remain on sale in Canada below this price point—including the inevitable fees (freight, PDI, dealer fees, A/C tax, etc.):
Hyundai Venue – $25,095
The FWD-only Korean subcompact crossover currently holds the distinction of being the least expensive new vehicle in the country. It’s also fuel-efficient, equipped with familiar mechanical components and nimble around town. However, the Venue does make compromises in terms of ride quality and interior space. The model sold overseas has just received a redesign, but our Venue faces an uncertain future. Take advantage of it while you still can.
Hyundai Elantra – $25,945
The sales charts show the Elantra is closing in on the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. Decent handling, good build quality, steadily improving reliability and a generous 5-year/100,000km warranty are all in its favour. That said, it’s extremely difficult to find a base Essential model on dealer lots. Also, keep in mind that a new generation is coming for 2027 and will inevitably be more expensive.
Kia K4 – $27,031
The K4 has successfully replaced the Forte as a more stylish, more spacious and better equipped compact sedan. New for 2026 is the even more attractive K4 Hatchback, which adds a good dose of versatility for only $500 more. In fact, it’s the most affordable hatchback in Canada.
Mitsubishi RVR – $27,848
Essentially unchanged since 2011, the Mitsubishi RVR is getting extremely old. Technology is generally outdated, noise levels are awful, and styling can bore people to death. However, for those who simply want a new vehicle to go from A to B, the conservative RVR proves reliable, cheap to own and easy to use. Don’t forget about Mitsubishi’s excellent warranty.
Toyota Corolla – $27,854
The next-generation Corolla is approaching, likely as a 2027 model, but the current one remains an easy recommendation for budget-conscious buyers looking for long-term ownership. Resale value and durability are virtually unmatched, although the Honda Civic would beg to differ. The drab interior, dated screens and long delivery times are no fun.
Nissan Sentra – $27,887
Offsetting the loss of both the Versa and Altima, the Sentra is all new for 2026—well, at least in terms of styling and technology. The compact sedan’s exterior dimensions and 2.0-litre engine are unchanged. This conservative evolution has allowed Nissan to keep price hikes to a minimum.
Mazda3 – $28,263
All indications are that the aging yet still attractive Mazda3 will return with no significant changes for the 2027 model year—the ninth and likely final year of the current generation. It remains one of the most fun and reliable cars in its class. On the other hand, fuel economy is unimpressive. Visibility and interior space could be better, too.
Volkswagen Jetta – $29,218
The Jetta is experiencing a resurgence. Last year’s styling and technology updates have helped. Customers also appreciate the interior space, driving dynamics and fuel efficiency. The German sedan’s 2026 lineup continues to maintain an all-inclusive price starting under $30,000, which is to Volkswagen’s credit.
Hyundai Kona – $29,845
The very popular Kona is one of the best buys in the subcompact SUV/crossover segment. It stands out with flashy looks, a 5-year/100,000km vehicle and powertrain warranty, plus a wide range of value-packed models. The upcoming 2027 Kona will receive a mid-cycle update and almost certainly exceed $30,000, alas.
Kia Seltos – $29,031
A completely redesigned 2027 Seltos will go on sale this summer, so act fast if you want to save money. The outgoing model still holds its own, sharing its platform and powertrains with the Kona. Dollar for dollar, Kia’s small SUV is slightly better equipped, helped by the fact that the current generation dates back to 2021.
Another vehicle we need to mention is the Fiat 500e. Although this electric city car from Italy carries an all-inclusive base price of $42,290, the automaker is currently offering a substantial $8,000 discount before taxes. After deducting the federal and provincial incentives applied after taxes, the final price comes down to $32,426, making it comparable to many of the vehicles mentioned above.
