All-New Mercedes-Benz CLA is a Turning Point for the Silver Star
Based on the Concept CLA that made its debut in Munich back in September 2023, the next generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLA subcompact sedan will arrive on the Canadian market towards the end of this year as a 2026 model. Despite its small footprint, this car is bound to make a big splash and should be taken very seriously. Why? Because it marks a turning point for the Silver Star company.
Indeed, this CLA will be the first of an all-new family of cars, heralding a new chapter for the entry segment at Mercedes‑Benz. According to CEO Ola Källenius, it’s designed to set new standards in range, efficiency and charging speed.
You see, for the first time, Mercedes-Benz will be offering both electric and conventional powertrains from the same platform—unlike the EQE and EQS, which are separate products from the E-Class and S-Class. With its new MMA modular architecture, the 2026 CLA will initially launch as a pure EV in Canada, featuring an 85.5kWh battery and offering a maximum range that should exceed 600 km in RWD configuration or close to that number in AWD configuration.
Output will be either 268 hp or 349 hp depending on the model, enough to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.6 seconds or 4.8 seconds, respectively. Just as impressive as performance will be the car’s efficiency thanks in part to one of the world’s lowest drag coefficients (0.21). Oh, and you can expect DC fast charging sessions to give you back 300 km in as little as 10 minutes.
As an alternative, the CLA will pack an advanced hybrid system combining a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and 1.3kWh battery. Power (TBD) will be handled by a new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and pure electric driving will be possible at speeds of up to 96 km/h. Further specifications will be announced at a later date, but for now, this all sounds quite promising.
A Major Evolution Inside, Too
Behind a new-look grille adorned with 142 illuminated stars, and under a large glass roof included as standard, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA offers more space for passengers and cargo (the electric variant even boasts a 101-litre front trunk) than ever before, to the point of rivaling the C-Class as well as the Tesla Model 3. But that’s not all.
Just like the departed A-Class was the first model to use the new MBUX infotainment system, this next-generation CLA ushers in the brand new MB.OS and is described by Källenius as “the most intelligent car we’ve ever built,” enhancing the car-driver relationship with natural, intuitive interaction and proactive support through an AI-powered Virtual Assistant.
It’s all part of the so-called Superscreen, which covers the entire width of the dashboard and incorporates a passenger-side display for watching movies or playing video games. The system comes with even more functions, including advanced navigation that takes into account the nearest charging stations.
In short, here is a car destined to lead something of a revolution in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. Prices will inevitably rise (the outgoing CLA carries a base MSRP of $51,000), but as we’ve just seen, customers will get a lot for their money.
