Upcoming Kia EV3, EV5 Could Be Quebec’s Next Big EV Thing
Despite slowing demand for electric vehicles globally, Kia is not turning back as it continues to expand its product portfolio. Following the EV6 and EV9, the next models to land in Canada will be the EV3 and EV5, both utility vehicles in a smaller package to be sold at more affordable prices.
Are they bound to become the next EV stars in Quebec? That wouldn’t be too surprising. Let’s take a look!
Kia EV3
Let’s start with the smaller of the two, and the one due to arrive first, in early 2026. Kind of a condensed version of the larger EV9, the EV3 is designed as a subcompact crossover that doesn’t sacrifice too much passenger space or battery range in order to help as many people as possible make the transition from gasoline to electric.
Measuring 4.3 metres long (with a wheelbase of 2.68 metres), 1.85 metre wide and 1.56 metre high, it is roughly the same size as the current Niro EV and will directly rival the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt. We’re talking about a front-wheel-drive vehicle only, although a GT performance model with dual motors and all-wheel drive could eventually follow.
Customers will have a choice of two batteries—58.3 kWh and 81.4 kWh—with maximum range said to be around 480 km. Meanwhile, the electric motor generates 201 horsepower and 209 lb-ft of torque, sending the EV3 from 0-100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.
Beyond that, we’re impressed with the EV3’s design (although visibility out the rear window appears to be extremely limited and the liftgate opening isn’t very large) and technology. The interior layout is once again very similar to that of the EV9, except for the new centre console complete with a sliding table, which will be great for eating or working on a laptop while the vehicle is charging.
The large digital interface combining a pair of 12.3-inch screens with a 5-inch screen in between features Kia’s latest infotainment system powered by a virtual assistant with generative AI, allowing drivers to interact with the vehicle in more enjoyable ways. They’ll even have the ability to play video games when parked or customize the displays with a number of themes including their favourite NBA team. Pretty cool, isn’t it?
Kia EV5
This one is a compact SUV the size of a Kia Sportage. In a rare twist, the EV5 will be sold in Canada but not in the U.S. It’s slated to arrive in dealerships in early 2026, also built on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform but using a cost-saving 400V electric system rather than the 800V system found on the EV6 and EV9.
When it comes to styling, there are striking similarities with other Kia EVs, such as the signature front grille and Star Map lighting. In the rear, the taillights are connected by a light bar as seen on more and more vehicles across the industry, while the fairly large spoiler is said to improve aerodynamic performance and maximize range in the process.
Inside, drivers will face a huge panoramic display that stretches nearly 30 inches, just like in the EV3. Passenger space was a big focus of designers, too, with generous headroom and legroom to make for comfortable road trips. There’s a decent trunk, additionally, although the cargo floor is a bit high.
As far as driving and performance are concerned, few details are known at the moment, but we can tell you that the EV5 will be available with both FWD and AWD, as well as a choice of two batteries (60.3 and 81.4 kWh). Oh, and there’ll be an NACS charging port allowing direct access to Tesla Superchargers.
You like cars better? Kia has also unveiled an electric sedan called EV4, with production for the North American market scheduled to begin by the end of 2025 and deliveries likely to follow in the first half of 2026. Keep an eye on it!
