What Do We Know About the Next Ford Mustang?

A lot of car enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the new Ford Mustang, especially since camouflaged prototypes have been caught testing near the company’s headquarters and bits of information have leaked online.

The seventh generation of the iconic pony car (codename S650) will hit the market as a 2024 model—not 2023 as Ford initially planned. It’s been confirmed in recent weeks that the world premiere will take place sometime next year.

If we had to wager, our money would be on April 17—the date in 1964 the original Mustang made its official debut in New York. Ford loves to make connections with its glorious past.

From a design standpoint, it likely will be similar to the current generation. That’s a good thing, of course—the Mustang’s silhouette is one of its trademarks, after all. However, look for a significantly updated interior featuring a digital instrument cluster and a larger touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard. As large as the Mustang Mach-E’s? Don’t count on it.

Mustang Hybrid?

Based on the information we have, the 2.3-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost engine and 5.0-litre V8 will carry over to the next Mustang. Hybrid variants have been mentioned before, but they probably won’t be ready at launch. An all-wheel drive system has fueled rumours, as well, though it looks like at this point the Mustang will retain its RWD configuration.

The Mustang is expected to ride on a revised and updated version of the existing platform instead of moving to a brand new architecture. There’s excellent news for sporty driving enthusiasts: the six-speed manual transmission will be back!

As for the almighty Mustang Shelby GT500, a return is possible, but no details are available for the time being.

Production of the Ford Mustang will continue at the Flat Rock assembly plant in Michigan. It could be the last generation to feature a gasoline engine, mind you. A fully electric Mustang is likely coming early in the next decade.
